Much more lateral weight shift is required to move into Key 1 if you start your practice with your feet side by side with the weight evenly balanced. This is because when you transition from Key 6 to 1 you have a foot swinging forward to counterbalance the lateral weight shift. If you start your practice in "Key 0" to transition to Key 1, there is no foot swinging from Key 6 to 1 to provide counterbalance to the lateral weight shift.
The Tai Chi classics mandate that one stand at all times with the weight unevenly distributed.
Why does this matter?
Because the feet/hips are supposed to swing forward and parallel, meaning that the feet should track a straight line forward, much like railroad tracks. If you lean more laterally getting into key 1 then you will need to swing the foot forward differently to plant it properly.
What should we do?
Start in Key 5!!!!
The reason you start in key 5 is so that your body weight has dropped into the Earth. This is very important. if your body is holding up your body weight, then you will need to shift laterally. But if the Earth has your body weight, then much less lateral shift is required. We can hear Founder state this here:If you don't drop your body weight to the Earth, a lot of times your body weight will go to the right or to the left, so people sway.Never start in "Key 0" (which does not exist and never was taught) and try to transition to Key 1.
Now of course, once you get good you can start in Key 0 with no problem as you can see Krissan Iskandar doing here.
